You are legally responsible for all occupants of your boat.  Instruct at least one of your passengers in the basic fundamentals of handling your boat in case you should become disabled.  Show all hands the locations of emergency equipment and how to use it.  Observe the rules of the road.

Before boating, obtain the weather forecast for your area.  Familiarize yourself with the weather bureau warning system signal and waterway traffic sign information.

Contact your local US Coast Guard Auxiliary.  Take advantage of their seasonal boat inspections and safety classes.
